چکیده
Conference for helpful comments and suggested revisions. The normal culpability assumption applies. Abstract Climate change and population growth anticipate the need for efficient, sustainable, long-term groundwater management. Groundwater serves as the primary water source for approximately 80 percent of public water systems in the United States and for many more as a secondary source. Traditionally management relies on groundwater to meet rising demand by increasing supply, but climate uncertainty and population growth require more judicious management to achieve efficiency and sustainability. Over pumping leads to groundwater overdraft and jeopardizes the ability of future users to depend on the resource. Optimal urban groundwater pumping is a solution to this conundrum. This paper investigates to what extent and under what circumstances optimally controlled groundwater pumping improves social welfare. It considers management in a hydro-economic framework and finds the optimal pumping path and the optimal price path. These enable the paper to identify the social benefit of controlled pumping and the scarcity rent, a tool to sustainably manage groundwater resources. The paper numerically illustrates the model with Albuquerque, New Mexico as the case study. The Albuquerque results indicate that, in the presence of strong demand growth, controlled pumping improves social welfare by 22 percent, lengthens the resource, and provides planners a mechanism to achieve water sustainability.

Groundwater level simulation using artificial neural network: a case study from Aghili plain, urban area of Gotvand, south-west Iran
In this paper, the Artificial Neural Network (ANN) approach is applied for forecasting groundwater level fluctuation in Aghili plain, southwest Iran. An optimal design is completed for the two hidden layers with four different algorithms: gradient descent withmomentum (GDM), levenberg marquardt (LM), resilient back propagation (RP), and scaled conjugate gradient (SCG). Rain, evaporation, relative...

Compared to surface water, groundwater resources are the primary source of water supply in arid and semi-arid regions of Iran, hence the importance of the management of these resources . In this regard, we assessed the effects of landuse changes on the qualitative and quantitative status of groundwater resources in Eshtehard region, Iran. Through processing and analyzing the satellite images, ...
متن کاملGroundwater pollution assessment in urban areas of Qom City
Nowadays, it is vital to pay attention more seriously to the urban environmental risks because of its effects on citizens' lives. One of these problems is groundwater pollution which threatens much valuable water resources. Drinking water in Qom City is provided from different resources, such as watersheds and water wells which are located within the city. Although there is a shortage of water ...

The main portion of water demands of arid regions like Kashan Plain, Iran supply by groundwater wells. This research was conducted to assess the groundwater quality as well as modelling and mapping groundwater quality in the study area using geosatistics and deterministic techniques. Five water quality parameters, including Electrical Conductivity, Sodium Adsorption Ratio, Total Hardness, ...

Quantitative changes in groundwater and crises resulting from uncontrolled water extraction have turned water resources management into one of the supply-demand dilemmas in arid regions. The present study evaluated the quantitative situation of water resources in the Ardestan Plain adjoining the Ardestan desert by using the MODFLOW mathematical model. Simulation of groundwater flow in the stead...
